The 5 Best Classroom Timers

Classroom timers are one of my absolute necessary classroom staples. I use them for EVERYTHING! Not only do they keep me on track as the teacher, but they are so helpful for students! From center rotations to timing student breaks, they help classrooms go round. Timers can be beyond beneficial to help support executive functioning needs. However, they’re NOT created equal. These are my 5 tried and true classroom timers that I’d recommend to anyone. Bonus points that they’re available on Amazon and will likely speed to you in two days!

1.) Time Timer

This visual staple is MY FAVORITE. The Time Timer is everything you want in a non-digital timer. They come in a wide variety of sizes, however I find this one to be the most versatile and functional (I love the handle). The red disappears as the time goes by so students can visually see how much time they have remaining. You can flip a switch on the back to set an auditory alarm sound (more like a “ding!”) when the time is up. This is NOT the timer for you if you regularly use timers for under 5 minutes.

2.) Digital Timer

Sometimes, digital timers are really what you need. I like this one for smaller amounts of time because it’s very visual. I like how bold and big the display is, and the red color allows students to visually find it.

3.) Time Tracker

The Time Tracker is my recommended classroom timer for center rotations. I love how visual it is, as you can set it for multiple ways of showing visually how much time is remaining. When you’re the teacher running a center, it’s almost impossible to also be the person in charge of sharing how much time remains. This one is what you need!

4.) Timed Sand Timer

Some students really respond well to sand timers. These come in sets that designate multiple time frames. I like these for individual students or small groups.

5.) YouTube Timer

If you’re looking for a great whole class option, try out these timers on YouTube! I linked one of my favorites, but there are endless options. You can also make these smaller and add them to slide decks. I love them for timing turn & talk/table talk conversations, timing how long classroom clean up will take, or to time transitions between activities or lining up.

While you’re at it, check out this entire bundle of executive functioning supports. They’re perfect for the classroom!
