5 Amazing Fall Picture Books that Support SEL

This post contains affiliate links.

What teacher doesn’t love a seasonal read aloud? A perfect collection of fall picture books? While I think we ALL would respond with a resounding, “ME!” to that question, it can be a lot of work to find the right resources you’re looking for. Never fear, I have done a round up to take all the hard work off your shoulders. These fall picture books are perfect for the autumn season and ALL have a focus on social emotional learning topics. Click the links to see some more information about each book, purchase it through Amazon, or to make a wish list to remind you what to snag at the library.

If you’re looking to bulk up your classroom library but you’re feeling constrained by your current school budget, look no further. This post about Donors Choose will help give you ideas and tips on how to use the website well and get the resources your students need and deserve.

The Very Last Leaf by Stef Wade

This is the sweet story of a very smart leaf named Lance Cottonwood. Lance is nervous about falling off the tree, and the book focuses on anxiety and worried thoughts, as well as perfectionist tendencies. This is a great book to read in fall to tackle these tricky topics, but also for students who are facing change or a new transition.

Because of an Acorn by Lola M Schaefer

This science focused book takes the reader through the life cycle beginning with the acorn. This a great book to address working memory, sequencing, and cause and effect. Often it can be tricky to have meaningful conversations surrounding abstract executive functioning topics, but this engaging book gives a perfect opportunity to make these skills tangible.

Thankful by Eileen Spinelli

Gratitude and thankfulness is one of those topics we can never touch on enough! This is one of many fall picture books that is perfect for introducing the topic of gratitude. It is also a great book to discuss random acts of kindness and acts of service, and how they impact the greater community.

Thanking the Moon by Grace Lin

This charming picture book follows a Chinese American family as they prepare for and celebrate the Mid-Autumn Moon Festival. This gives students a chance to see a mirror into a life they may relate to, and a window to peer into a new experience they may not be accustomed to. This is one of many fall picture books that offers an excellent opportunity to introduce Venn Diagrams to help students find commonalities and differences amongst the characters and themselves.

The Little Scarecrow Boy by Margaret Wise Brown

This is one of few fall picture books that falls into a “coming of age” type story for little ones! The little scarecrow boy learns lessons from his father and puts them to use for himself. This is a great book for discussing more abstract instances of cause and effect, and how we can learn from our elders about life.
